Choose a reputable site like that you've heard of before. You can go with smaller ones, but you won't have as much variety. Only six guys in my area fit my profile. Of course, two of them do appear to be interesting. We'll see. But that brings me to my next piece of advice....
I got an email from someone asking me out right away. Not only that, here's how it was phrased: "I am (name withheld) xxxxxxx@xxxxxxx.xxx 111-111-1111 I'll meet you at Pickerings Friday if you want a free drink." I've never had a conversation with this man, and we don't have friends in common. Immediately I was suspicious of his motives, not to mention the fact that he obviously doesn't have much self esteem if he thinks that's the only quality he has--buying a woman a drink. To make matters worse, he appears to be looking for a golddigger--someone who only wants a man who can buy her stuff.
Be safe. If I wanted to meet this guy (which I don't) it would be completely stupid for me to go meet him alone. You should talk to someone online and get to know them before you agree to meet in person. Even then, you might want to suggest that you each bring some friends when you meet. Your friends don't need to know why you're going there, just say, "Hey let's go to Pickering's tonight." If you prefer to really keep your online dating a secret, at least tell a close trusted friend what you're doing, where you're going, etc. Don't give the other person your phone number or address until a certain amount of trust is built up between you. Always meet at the place you're going until you've built that trust. And finally, keep your cell phone with you and make sure it's fully charged.
