Joe always had to travel a lot for work, so they were used to that. Besides, Joe usually tried to have Jill visit when he had to be gone for an extended period of time. When Joe's company was looking for volunteers to go to Alaska for two months, he was tempted to volunteer right away. He had always wanted to go to Alaska, but he wasn't sure he'd ever go on his own. At least not at this point in his life. However, Joe had Jill to consider. They had moved clear across the country for his job, away from family and friends. Jill gave up a job she loved just so he could be happy in his job. She was miserable in their new city, and Joe knew it. In fact, they had just returned from their home state for a holiday visit and it was hard for Jill to leave. When they got back, this opportunity arose. Joe felt like it would be jerky to leave Jill in a place she didn't want to be for two months, so he talked to her about it. Of course, Jill said she would miss him, but she knew he really wanted to go to Alaska. She knew the reason he wanted to go was so he could see Alaska. And this particular project was one he would enjoy, as well. She said she'd be fine if he went. He asked, "Won't you get lonely?" and she said, "Yes, but only on the weekends. I can keep myself busy enough during the week with work and going to the gym to be fine." He even said he wouldn't be able to bring her out for a weekend this time because it was too expensive, but she still said it was fine.

Joe respected Jill enough to ask her feelings about his volunteering for the assignment, and Jill respected Joe enough that she wanted him to be able to do this to be happy. It would have been selfish for her to ask him not to go. Of course, Joe wouldn't find out if he was chosen for the project until later, so they would still have time together. As you can see, our best love advice is to respect each other.
