Long Distance Relationship
If you're single and looking, ideally you'd find someone in your town. But there are some places where the numbers aren't equal. There are either more men than women or more women than men. Such an uneven number leads to bad behavior on the part of the prevalent sex, and many good people are left "unattached." At some point, a long distance relationship might seem like a good idea.
Love Across the Miles
This is the story of Stephanie and Max. Stephanie lives in Kansas City, MO and Max lives in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Stephanie has a friend named Julia who is married to Steve. Julia and Steve moved to Fort Lauderdale from Kansas City about a year ago, and Max works with Steve. Poor Max. He has made it very clear that he wants to find someone to love. Julia would like to introduce Max to Stephanie, but the distance thing is an issue. Knowing how picky Stephanie is, Julia knows she's taking a risk by trying to fix Stephanie up with someone. But Max seems to fit the bill, from what she knows about him. When Julia told Max about Stephanie, he sounded interested, but he said he didn't know if he wanted to be in a long distance relationship or not. Julia couldn't make an argument for or against that. When Julia told Stephanie about Max, the distance didn't seem to bother her. Of course, Kansas City has more women than men, so men tend to treat women badly. The mentality of most men there is "If it doesn't work out with this girl, there will be another one." In fact, Julia noticed that a good number of her friends who were married or engaged were married or engaged to men who were originally from another city or state. She and Stephanie had discussed that before, as well as the pros and cons of a long distance relationship.
Still, Julia couldn't argue with Max about it. There are things missing in a long distance relationship that you miss about having the person nearby, like Friday and Saturday night dates, having someone to cuddle with when you stay in and watch movies, cooking for each other, etc. On the other hand, if you really want to meet someone and you just haven't had any luck in your area, a long distance relationship might be an option to consider. After all, there are more ways to stay in touch than ever before--email, online chat, instant messaging. And most cell phone plans offer free long distance. You can send each other letters too (the old fashioned kind for a romantic surprise). Of course, none of this replaces physical contact, but it can be a way to get to know someone better before taking the next step, whatever that may be.
We're not saying a long distance relationship is a walk in the park. There is a 50% chance that it won't work. But there's also a 50% chance that it will if you just give it a try.
