Long Distance Relationships

Long distance relationships really can work. It just takes a little hard work and creativity. One of readers has some advice about long distance relationships.

Long Distance Relationships

Ever notice that to bond with a baby, you need a lot of face time? Then when they're a little older (6 months to a year) you need a lot of "floor time" with the (playing on the floor). This helps them remember you. If they don't see you a lot, they have a sort of an "Out of sight, out of mind" mentality because their cognitive abilities aren't well-developed yet. But many long distance relationships suffer this same fate if the people involved don't work to keep it alive. Here are some ways to do that.

Making A Long Distance Relationship Thrive

Making long distance relationships work takes time and effort, but it can be done. Here's a story from Leslie, one of our readers in Toledo:

"I know that relationships require hard work, even if they aren't long distance relationships.Throwing in the long distance factor just makes them harder. I know because I'm in one now. I know that you both have to work at it. It can't be one-sided. To keep my boyfriend thinking of me, and vice-versa, I send him stuff through the mail. Whether it's a letter, cookies, a present I ordered for him online....whatever. It doesn't matter. Of course, he does things like that too.

The best advice I can give anyone about long distance relationships is to make time to communicate with each other. Ask yourself if you're willing to make the sacrifices required to make your long distance relationship work and if your relationship is important enough to you to make it work. Do you see a future together that makes all the sacrifices worth it? Once you answer these questions for yourself, you'll know if you want to continue or not."

Long distance relationships are so hard. Cell phones, email and instant messaging make it easier, but it can't replace a hug from your loved one. If you're missing each other and it hurts, you probably still care. That means it is worth it. Plus, it makes you appreciate your time together even more when you do have it. Instead of "Out of sight, out of mind," it's more like "Absence makes the heart grow fonder!"
