Celebrity Relationships

Ever notice that when certain celebrities are seen holding hands or hugging or smooching in public that they deny rumors of being a couple and say they're "just friends?" Come on, the public's not that stupid! On the other hand, does the public have a right to know?

Secrecy is Key
Recently, Gwyneth Paltrow said that Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt should have kept quiet about their marital problems. And Jennifer Aniston agrees. But who was doing all the blabbing to begin with? Brad! And speaking of Brad, he must have learned something, because he and Angelina Jolie are still denying that they're an item. But the celebrity rags seem to think otherwise. And what's up with Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban? Oh wait--they're "just friends," of course!

Most celebrity relationships are made more difficult by their celebrity status. Some of the more successful celebrity relationships are ones where only one person is a celebrity and the other is a civilian. Think about it--most famous celebrity relationships that were in the media spotlight ended up doomed. Remember these?

Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston - Now divorced
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez - Broken engagement
Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton - Divorced
Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman - Divorced
Paris Hilton and Paris Latsis - Broken engagement
Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger - in custody battle over their kids

Here are some celebrity relationships that could learn a lesson from the mistakes of these people:

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie - Trying to stay private
Britney Spears and Kevin Federline
Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey

On the other hand, there are some celebrity relationships that have managed to stay below the radar as far as the press is concerned, and seem to be doing well:

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Robinson
Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart
Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck
Julia Roberts and Danny Moder
Sandra Bullock and Jesse James

Relationships are hard enough without every newspaper, magazine and t.v. show around speculating about what's going on. Before we make jokes about how they are doomed to failure, think about how hard it would be if you and your sweetie were being targeted by the media everywhere you went all the time.
